An investigation of actors’ differences in the perception of learning ecosystems’ smartness: the case of the Aveiro University.

Abstract

In this paper we report about the first investigation aimed at identifying possible differences in the perception of the campus’ smartness among the actors – bachelor students, master students and professors – animating the learning processes and the campus’ life. The detected differences, as discussed in the body of the paper, can be ascribed to differences in role, accumulated experience of the campus’ life and, of course, expectations. These latter can be used as a basis to activate a design process to achieve the campus’ smartness.

Ambient Intelligence Environment for University Students Counselling and Lowering Dropouts

Abstract

Student counselling combines structured planning and choice identification for professional life. The outcomes of successful counselling include personal fulfilment, work/life balance, goal achievement and financial security. This paper presents an ambient intelligence environment (AIE) designed for evaluating student’s options with regard chosen studies as “optimal choices”, identification of the level of curriculum adequacy for a sustainable carrier management and consequently lowering dropouts. Students have been assessed under multiple aspects such as: thinking style, personality testing, vocational orientation and entrepreneurship capacity. Conceptual ideas from ambient intelligence and intelligent systems have been translated to obtain the functionality of the environment. Students are offered a complex evaluation system that grants advice and counselling for a better integration into the academic environment and further into the society. Several tests have been designed and implemented within AIE.

Implementation of Social Entrepreneurship Projects. The path to Communities of Practice

Abstract

In Portugal, Social Entrepreneurship is evolving. New projects/initiatives or organizations are created everyday focused on the positive impact they can achieve. It is important to understand who the target population of these projects is and what their major intervention areas are. This goal seeks a wider one which is to understand the rise of Communities of Practice (CoP) in the specific context of Social Entrepreneurship, specifically how social entrepreneurs beneficiate from CoP to solve the problems they encounter and how Social Entrepreneurship Institute can be a catalyst of those CoP. Since social entrepreneurs develop their work apart in Portuguese territory, communication skills and tools it’s also a very important variable to analyze, in order to understand Personal Learning Networks.

Citizen-driven dashboards in smart ecosystems: a framework

Abstract

This position paper is concerned with the research and design of infocommunication technologies for citizen engagement and learning in smart ecosystems. The work assumes a human-centric citizen-driven smart city design approach and also proposes a R&D iterative framework model based on SOA work that goes from citizen inquiry to a front-end dashboard paradigm proposal. A research framework is discussed alongside scientific and public state of the art projects, their methods, techniques and main goals/results that inform smart ecosystem R&D agenda today. The specific contribution of this work concentrates on the proposal of affordant visual dashboards to represent selected open data smart ecosystem dimensions to be interpreted by the common citizen, capable of engaging the citizen and supporting in loco learning of real context of need/use situations.
